Our Mission

The Royal Canadian Legion is a non-profit Canadian ex-service organization (veterans’ organization) founded in 1925. The Okanagan Falls (Branch 227) Royal Canadian Legion’s mission is to serve Veterans, including military and RCMP members and their families, to promote Remembrance, and to serve our communities and our country. How long has the OK Falls Legion been operating?

On November 9, 2025, Okanagan Falls Legion #227 will celebrate our 78th Anniversary! The branch first received their charter November 12, 1947.  Fifteen veterans were charter members, and their meetings were held in the local hardware store and then in the Women’s Institute Hall. As membership grew, property was purchased in 1951 close to the south end of Skaha Lake beach where a building was erected, mainly by members and volunteer labor. We have been in our present location since 1973.

Can anyone visit the legion, or do I have to be a member?

Anyone can visit the Legion! Non-members will have to sign in as visitors, and we encourage all guests to join our Legion.

What exactly does the Legion do?

The Legion’s core mission revolves around supporting our Veterans, their families and our communities. Activities include weekly meet draws, drop-in darts, pancake breakfasts, community meetings, many other fun events, and review of applications for funding individual needs in our community.

When was the Legion founded?

The Legion was founded as The Canadian Legion of the British Empire Service League in Winnipeg in 1925 and incorporated by a special Act of Parliament and was issued its Charter in 1926. In 1960, Queen Elizabeth II assented to the prefix “Royal” which was added to create its current name – The Royal Canadian Legion. Read more history here.

What is the history of the poppy as a symbol of remembrance?

The significance of the red poppy can be traced back to World War I; poppies grew over the graves of soldiers in the area of Flanders, France. Fields that had been barren before battle exploded with the blood-red flowers after the fighting ended. During the tremendous bombardments of the war, the chalk soils became rich in lime from rubble, allowing the popaver rhoeas (poppy flower) to thrive. When the war ended, the lime was quickly absorbed, and the Poppy began to disappear again. The Poppy was adopted as a pin to wear on Remembrance Day every November.
